There’s no doubt that Poker is considered these days as one of the most popular gambling games, both off and online. In fact, Poker is probably going through its “golden age”, as more and more people are learning to play this fantastic game, which only a few years ago was considered a professional’s only game. Nevertheless, not many people are familiar with the history of Poker, which may turn out to be as interesting as the game itself, if not even more.
The history of poker is a matter of debate, as it seems to resemble more than one ancient gambling game. According to one popular belief, the Chinese began playing a pretty similar game around 970 A.D. Traveling through time, it is known that ancient Egyptians played a variety of game cards through the 12th and 13th century, but , many think that the closest ancestor of Poker, as played nowadays, it the Persian game, “As Nas”. But, where does the term “Poker” come from ? It seems as the origin of the name may descend from the French “poque”, which itself descended from the German “pochen”, which means “to knock”. Both of those games were developed from the Spanish game, “Primero”, which is thought to be one of the first gambling games that used bluffing as a common practice. This game, which is sometimes called “Poker’s Mother” originated in Spain, around 1526, and closely resembles the version of Poker we play these days at the various casinos.
Even though many variations of Poker have appeared since its creation, some of them have proven to be much more popular than the others. “5 Card Draw” for example, was considered for many years the most popular version. In fact, during that time Stud Poker was considered illegal, due to the fact that it’s based solely on chance, something that certainly helped raise the Draw Poker popularity. Shortly after being legalized, a few years before World War 2 started, “7 Stud Poker” was crowned as the new “king of poker”, enjoying a huge popularity worldwide, but especially in the United States. The next big change came during the 1970’s, when a new variation of Poker was born – Texas Hold’em. There are, of course, several other versions of this game, including Omaha Poker, Manila Poker and Razz, but there’s no question that the actual ruler of the Poker world, both online and offline, is Texas Hold’em
