Action: This is a general gambling term which refers to the total amount of money bet in a specific period of time. Ten bets of ten dollars each is $100 of action.
Bankroll: The player's money that is available for bet making.
Basic Strategy: A blackjack playing method, which a player can easily memorize without counting cards.
Breaking Hand (Stiff): A hand that may bust when hit once, such as a hard 12, 13, 14, 15 or 16.
Burned: Discarded. The top card after cutting the deck, so the player can't see its value, is burned.
Busted: To draw cards that make the combined value greater than 21, in which case, the hand is lost immediately.
Color up: A suggestion made by the dealer, to exchange lower value chips with higher value ones, to make the same value.
Counting: A player's ability to keep a record of cards played until a certain point in time. This ability allows this player having a relatively good idea of the cards that are still in the shoe.
Doubling Down: A game option. The player, if feels that his / hers hand will win with just a draw of one more card, turns his / her two cards face up and doubles his / hers original bet by two. The player then gets one more card.
Draw: To ask for more cards further than the original two.
Face Card: Kings, Queens or Jacks.
First Base: A nickname to the first seat at the table, to the immediate left of the dealer.
Hard Count: The cards' true face value.
Hard Hand: 1. A hand that has no ace. 2. A hand with an ace, but the ace can be counted just in one way (for example, an ace, 8 and 9).
Hit: Adding one more card to a player's hand.
Hole Card: The dealer's one faced down card.
Insurance: A side bet. It is offered to the player when the dealer's face-up card is an ace. If the dealer has a 10 as the hole card, thus making his hand a blackjack, the player wins the insurance bet. Pays 2 to 1.
Natural: A blackjack (an ace, and a 10 value card). Automatic winner. Pays 3 to 2.
Pat Hand: A hand with a total ranging from 17 to 21.
Pit Boss: A person that is in charge of blackjack games.
Point Count: The value of card counting at the hand's end.
Press: To enlarge the following wager's amount of money.
Push: A tie between the dealer and player. No money is lost or won.
Second Base: A nickname to the second seat at the table.
Shoe: A box in which all the cards are stocked. Used in multiple-deck games.
Soft Hand: A hand with an ace that can be counted as 11 or as 1.
Splitting: An option the player has when his / hers two original cards are of the same value (4s, 8s, face cards and 10s etc. ) of splitting the two cards to two different hand, and playing each hand individually.
